Word 2003 to pdf small enough for web

I have a 67-page Word document into which 20 or so 9" x 6" jpegs are placed.
The jpegs are saved at 100% size at only 120 dpi. My document is about 9.5
MB in size. I need to save this to pdf and make it small enough to post on a
web page. No matter what I do, I can't seem to make the pdf small enough to
post yet still have the jpeg maps be readable. I have used pdf optimizer in
Acrobat, and that doesn't help. I can get it down to about 8 MB. What else
can I do to optimize the size?

1) you may need to resize the pictures under picture properties just for the
application (resave it with a different name.)

right click the picture and select "format picture"
under the "picture" tab click "compress"
select change resolution "web/screen"
resave the document

2) you can print it with your pdf tool, it will be smaller
