WMP10 crashes every time I try to play an avi file

Media player has suddenly started crashing when I try to play any type of avi
file - including files that I had played earlier this evening with no
problems (mpeg files still play fine).

When I try to open an avi file, a dialogue box appears saying that WMP has
"encountered a problem and needs to close". This problem isn't exclusive to
WMP - I can't play avis with any other media player either.

I've tried to run System Restore, but no restore points are showing for the
current month and when I try to click back to select an earlier month to find
a restore point nothing happens. My anti-virus and spyware programs haven't
detected anything suspect - can someone help me figure out how to solve this
problem?

Hi - on my error log, the entry that appears each time I try to play an avi
file is an application error: Faulting application wmplayer.exe, version
10.0.0.3646, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address
0x00000000.

I did get one fault bucket number: Fault bucket 129963972 after the problem
started, but it isn't being generated every time I try to play an avi in a
media player.

Thanks for your help!

Is mmswitch.ax on the system...?

Are you sending up the crash reports? Thsoe should get you the fault bucket
numbers, which are pretty key to understanding any crash.
