Suddenly not able to play .avi files

I was able to play .avi files (captured from dv camera) just fine for years,
but when I went to start a project they don't play correctly. The video
stutters, sound doesn't play well, and it WMP ussually hangs up. This
problem is present in every program I have to play .avi (premiere, QT,
winamp, etc.).
I'm not sure what I did, but I know I removed a canon zoom browser from my
computer, and I have a vague memory of recently updating WMP or updating the
codecs on it.

I currently run WINXP SP2, and have windows medial player 10.
Any help would be appreciated, as I have a large amount of video to edit.
thanks in advance.

I saw another post that said to use system restore, I went as far back as I
could.
When it loaded, it said I didn't have enough space on my windows hard drive
(it said I had 65 mb) then it said it wouldn't restore to that point.
Then when everything was done loading, I had 1.5 gb free, and then I
couldn't restore anymore at all.
just giving an update.

Close all programs and run this batch file:

Hope this will fix your problem. Other things to try are:

1. Reinstall latest runtime of DirectX: full install:

2. (Re)install Windows Media Encoder

Reboot as required. If the above two steps do not work, try following:

If even the above attempts don't help then the only option seems to
reinstall Service Pack 2 (SP2).

and got this error message
