wmp wont play avi

my windows media player will not play avi files. tried g spot and it says s
mpeg 42 not installed, cannot seem to find a working codec downloaded a few
codec packs but none seemto work. any ideas?

Mpeg42 is available on the web, I have a copy of it, if you want it email me
