Unusual AVI activity in PPT 2007

Hello! I am having a very strange problem, and do not have a clue where to go
next. I hope someone has an idea here!

I have a PPT show that contains both WMV and AVI videos. At first, 2 of the
3 WMV only played sound, but no video (the other worked fine). This was
corrected by adjusting the video driver to turn off hardware acceleration.

Now, I have the AVI file that is 4 minutes long, but when played in the
presentation plays at ultra-fast forward, and is done in less than 10
seconds. In WMP, it plays fine, but in PPT - preview too - it plays all wrong.

I have reinstalled WMP and Direct-x in case there was a problem there, but
no change. all other updates are current, too, for my WinXPP system. We have
another machine running PPT2007 on Vista and it works fine there.
Unfortunately, the man who set up the laptop died a few months ago, so
without dissecting everything, there is no way to identify if there is
anything else involved.

WMP Properties for the video say:
Length: 04:06
Bit rate: 846Kbps
Media type: video
Video size: 368x208
Aspect Ratio: 1.77:1
Audio Codec: MPEG Layer-3 Decoder
Video Codec: -

Since it plays fine in WMP, I assumed it would also do the same in
PPT...does anyone have any ideas where I can look next to troubleshoot this?

Thanks!

Can you convert the video to WMV, possibly with pfcmedia.com?

Hi David! I could convert the file, but that isn't my real question. The
question is why can I drop .avi files into my PPT2007 slides on my Vista
laptop and have them work fine, but not on my XPP-based desktop? I would
expect that if they work fine in PPT2007 in one system, I should be able to
get them to work fine in my other system.

Normally I use WMV for all my PPT videos, but we have some groups in the
church that work extensively with AVI, and to convert each of them will be a
time-consuming process.

Thanks for the insight here!

Based on input from another place, I tried changing the filename from an
AVI extension to a WMV extension - no conversion, just a rename. I inserted
that file into the slide, and it worked perfectly. I renmaed it back to AVI,
and it messed up the playback.

I guess this would indicate a problem with the AVI processing, but how do I
troubleshoot this?
