Windows Media Player - Codecs

When Media Player 9,10 or 11 is installed on a freshly formatted and
installed systen it will not
play Dvd's and probably Avi's also. This is because the appropriate codecs
are not supplied
with Media Player. They will play however if something like Nero or
equivalent type application is also installed. If you don't install Nero or
the like, what and where can you find a codec package that will allow Media
Player ### to play dvd's? I believe that mpeg 2 or 3 or 4 codecs are
required. I tried Stinkies codec pack but they didn't work. I'm looking
for free codecs.
I'd also like to know why Windows Media Player does not supply the codecs.
