WMP volume compared to iTunes

When I play an MP3 using WMP 10, the volume is MUCH louder than when
playing the same track in iTunes 7. The difference is considerable -
in WMP I have the volume set to 10, whereas in iTunes the slider is
almost at the the top. I was under the impression that XP used the
same volume level for all applications. Anyone shed any light on this?

Almost correct. WMP10 uses the same volume leveling for all music
files if so selected under View>Enhancements>Crossfading and Auto
Volume Leveling. Not for all applications. You can use WinAmp, Musicmatch,
iTunes, dbPowerAmp, Creative SoundBlaster, some of these apps will have
different levels of output depending on their settings.
