The audio quality of video files I make with WMM2 is
inferior to that in files made with other video software,
even if rendered as DV-AVI. Is there something I can
check or adjust? Would a re-installation of WMM2 be
recommended?

Thanks.

Is your camera set to record 12-bit (32000Hz) sound or 16-bit (48000Hz)
sound? If it's recording 12-bit then you will get poor sound quality from
MM2's rendered output, which you won't get from other (non free of charge)
editing software. If that's the case then set your camera to record 16-bit
sound, if it will let you.
