I have a D-Link Wireless router (DI-614+). When setting it up I
noticed in the advanced tab the was a section to set the virtual
server. Does anybody know what the function of the virtual server is?

Internet traffic uses ports. A Virtual Server is a configurable setting
on most routers that allows traffic on a specific port to pass unimpeded
from the Internet to a specific port on the inside of the LAN.

Remote Desktop--->Port 3389--[Router]---->Destination PC, Port 3389

Without the Virtual Server, the Router will block the port/traffic.
