Wireless networking: allowing remote computer access to printer &

Colin

I have XP Home on my main computer and Windows 2000 Pro on a wireless remote
computer.
Sympatico is my ISP and has provided Bell Canada "Security Manager"
(includes firewall) and a wireless "ZWire" router.
I have set up "Shared Documents and Printers" on both computers.
I am able from the main computer to sign on to the remote computer and can
see "Shared Documents" as well as printers installed on the remote computer.
However, the reverse does not work, i.e. the remote computer does not have
access to the main computer "Shared Documents" and printer.
Windows Firewall has been configured on both computers to allow access to
"Shared Documents & Printers". The "Security Manager" firewall was turned
off on both.
I still can not access the printer & shared documents of the main computer.
Any suggestions?

The wireless doesn't have much to do with this, you will likely have the
same issues if you connect the remote via wire. The firewall software
you're running or router settings may be be an issue.

Where is the remote PC? Is it actually inside the router on the same
network, or is it at another location? If it's at another location, are
the correct ports open on the router? Do you have a valid public IP
address, and are the ports forwarded correctly?

It's not at all unusual for Wndows wireless systems to quietly connect to
the wrong network if there's one available. Verify that the wireless system
*really is* on the network you intended.

Start with simply locating the XP system from the W2K system. That has to
work before you can do anything else. Can you even ping the XP system?

I know that the remote computer can "see" the main computer (based on
"computers near me" or when I try to set up a printer) but it will not allow
me to "drill down" on the main computer to access "Shared Documents" and/or
the printer. (The remote has access through the router for email and the
web.)

I would have thought that the Windows Firewall would allow this to happen
(since I have enabled the share documents and printer). Since it doesn't it
is like I need to tweak the main computer somehow - but that's the problem.
I just don't know what is involved.

The way I read your response it appears you have 2 PCs on a LAN (Local Area
Network), not via WAN (Wide Area Network).
Your XP is the main PC as you state it and the Win2K is the remote PC.
The PCs connect locally to each other on your LAN via wireless router.
Both PCs have access to the WAN via wireless router.
You can access the shared folder on the Win2K PC from the XP PC.
You cannot access the XP PC from the Win2K PC.

Please correct anything that is incorrect and provide more detail on exactly
how each PC has been configured to share and access shares.
