Wireless mouse/keyboard don't work after system restart only work after power down

I'm not sure if this question is appropriate for this newsgroup or not. So
if it's not, I'd appreciate it if anyone can tell me where to go to ask it.

I recently switched to a wireless mouse and keyboard -- both from Microsoft.
Everything works fine except that when the system restarts (reboots without
power down) the mouse and keyboard are non-responsive after the boot up. But
if I power down the machine and then power it on to reboot, then they work
fine.

I have a 4-year old Gateway system.

Is there any incompatibility with wireless mouse/keyboard and my system? is
there a setting I can tweak to permit them to work after a restart?

Thanks for any help you may be able to give.

Does the receiver connect to your PC using a USB Channel ?
Also, does your BIOS have a setting called "Legacy USB
support" ?, if so what is it's setting (Enabled, Disabled).

You should also check to see if there is a BIOS update for
your specific Gateway model. (Read the Tech Notes for the
latest Revision and see if any mention of USB is noted.)

You might also check your USB Hubs in Device Manager &
make sure the "Allow Windows to Turn off this device..." is
not checked.

For diagnostics, you might try switching the Wireless channel
you mouse and keyboard are using.

There is also a "Recommended" Windows update for USB
that you may need to install on your system.

Finally, check your Device Manager - Click VIEW, check
"Show Hidden Device". Then in both mouse and Keyboard
categories remove your grayed out previous mice and KB's
from the device tree.
