Wireless LAN disconnected

I own an Averatec notebook with an 802.11g MiniPCI Wireless Network
card. We have Qwest DSL service with wireless capabilities. My IBM
thinkpad doesn't have a problem connecting to the internet, however
this computer won't even recognize the wireless signal for my modem, or
any others. I've recently reinstalled the latest drivers for the
wireless card but have had no success. Any suggestions?

You indicated that you have Qwest DSL, are you implying that the DSL modem
supplied by Qwest has wireless capabilities, or do you have a separate
wireless router. Also what type of wireless security are you implementing,
really cheap wireless A, B, G cards don't support WPA (Wireless Protected
Access). WPA is better then WEP, because it has a higher encryption rate.
I'm running WPA TKIP Personal on my Linksys WRT55AG. My only downfall with
this my Nintendo DS isn't WPA compliant so it too doesn't see my network but
my Sony PSP does. So I would definitely check the security capabilities of
the wireless card that came with the notebook. If your current security
setting is set to Open Access (no security implemented (WEP, WPA)) then I
would suggest going out and getting a higher end PCMCIA Wireless Card (I
prefer Linksys). Then try again to connect to your network, if you can, the
OEM card that came with you notebook is faulty. If the card is built into
the laptop I would suggest submitting it for warranty repair. Get it fix
while it's free.... ;)
