I have just started using my D-Link wireless PCi card, it seems to hog
the CPU at times, causing MP3 playback (from my hard disk) to jutter.

I'v e tried using the D-Link software, and the windows software to
manage the wireless settings and it still happens.

It's a 3Ghz celeron with 1GB of RAM and onboard graphics/sound.

Any solutions, apart from buying a dedicated sound card?

Which slot did you install to ?
Numbering schemes vary, but "Usually" Slot 1 is next to the AGP
or PCIe slot.

I have 3 PCI slots, and it's the one at the bottom of the case furthest
away from the AGP, next to a modem.

The reason I asked is because motherboards share IRQ's in their
PCI slots. I can't speak to the latest, but it used to be that only 2
of 5 slots would have what's called an independent IRQ assignment.
XP handles IRQ sharing very well and newer MBs have a APIC
(Advanced Peripheral Interface Controller) that extends the usual
IRQ Mapping of 15 up to 23. You should probably use the tool
Msinfo32.Exe. Expand the Hardware Resources category and in
its sub categories you'll see IRQs. Click and that and it display the
IRQ map for your PC. It is "Normal" to see two or more devices
on a single IRQ, but you need to determine which IRQ your NIC
card is using and how many other devices share that IRQ.
