wireless adapter fails to access internet

Ben

I have the Microsoft wireless kit MN700 MN720(adapter)
for my HP pavilion laptop. I am able to access the
internet with my laptop through the router(mn700) with an
ethernet connection. I can also connect to the router
management utility. When I install the MN720 adapter, I
get no internet connection or IP service through my
laptop. I am also unable to connect to the router
management utility. I can connect desktop PC using an
ethernet cable and access both the router and the
internet. The wireless card in my laptop indicates it is
working at 54mbs and all lights are functioning. It
appears I am getting an Automative Private Address
instead of the DHCP server. I am unable to do any pings
except to do the loopback test of 127.0.0.1. I have
worked with the MS hardware support for over eight hours
with no results. Any suggestions.

1. have you installed the wireless rollup package
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=826942

2. is the wireless zero configuration service running?

3. can you connect without WEP?

4. is the MN720 bridged to another adapter? (if yes, unbridge it)

please provide the steps that MS support had you take that failed.

I have installed the wireless rollup package. I have
tried changing the router to an access point. My PC will
connect however the laptop does not. The MN720 is not
bridged to any other connection. I have uninstalled
McAfee Firewall. The ICF is disabled in XP Pro. MS
support and myself have installed the router using both
the software and manually installing. My internet
connection works each time until I install the wireless
adapter. Then it appears to be unable to obtain an IP
address from the DHCP. I have manually added the IP,
subnet and gateway address and still cannot connect to
the internet. My wireless connection says I am connecting
and all lights function as normal but no internet access.
When I do a repair on the connection I get an error
unable to repair connection. When I go back to my XP
restore point and remove the wireless adapter I am able
to get an IP from the DHCP server and the internet
connection works through the router. Can you explain what
you mean when you ask is the wireless zero configuration
service running? Is there anything else that can be done?
Frustrated.

start, run, services.msc [ok]
scroll the list and look for wireless zero configuration. is it
running?

see some of my columns in the Expert Zone for all kinds of info on
wireless zero configuration.

you need to not use the MS Broadband utility to set up your wireless.
you need to use windows native wireless zero configuration.

don't worry about the base station/router. enable Wireless Zero config
and see if this solves your problem.

Wireless zero configuration is enabled. I have unloaded
the MS broadband utility. I have restarted the wireless
zero configuration service and continue to get an
internal IP address. The wireless connection indicates
excellent strength at 54mbs but no network or internet
connection. I can however still connect my desktop PC
with W98SE using an ethernet connection to the router. It
connects to the internet with no problems. What causes
the DHCP - IP configuration to break on the laptop when
you add a wireless card? The laptop connects fine using
an ethenet connection. Once the card gets installed it
will not connect through any connection until I do a
restore. I have disabled every other network connection
listed in my network places and get the same result. Even
when I remove the card and go back to my ethernet
connection, it still does not work until I do a restore.
What next??

can you:
start, run, cmd[ok]
ipconfig/all [ok]

copy the output and paste all of it into a reply here?

aha! Try removing that hotfix (826942) and see if your setup starts
working.
