Wired LAN connection problems

I have two identical systems on a LAN connected through an HP hub. I use the
LAN only for PC to PC traffic to share files & printers. Everything was
working fine until yesterday when one machine's Local Area Connection icon
displayed the ! in a yellow triangle and I no longer have any functional
connectivity to the LAN. I checked all the physical connections and all is
well. I then tried the "Repair" process several times, but always get the
message that it couldn't be repaired "because the following action cannot be
comp[leted: Reenewing your IP address."

I have disabled and enabled the adapter without success. I have gone though
the connecting to a network process several times on both computers and I
still can't get it to work. I also tried the Restore to a previous date when
it was working, but that didn't work either.

HELP - I'm all out of ideas.

This part seems crucial: "because the following action cannot be completed:
Renewing your IP address."

You say you use a hub - is there a router somewhere that is a DHCP server to
assign IP addresses? Otherwise, if the two PCs are the only items
networked, you should set static IP address for them.

No, this is just a dumb hub, there is no router anywhere in the LAN. When I
do and IPCONGIG on this machine I get:

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Autoconfiguration IP Address. . . : 169.254.164.37
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

The other machine has the following:

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Autoconfiguration IP Address. . . : 169.254.164.99
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :
