Internet connection sharing with PPPOE and two PCs

G

Ges

HiI need someone to explain to me where I'm making a mistake in
process:

I have 2 PCs. Lets call them PC_1 and PC_2.

PC_1 had a LAN port and cable modem connected to it via USB. To
connect o Internet, I have to have connected cable modem to USB and
then I have to dial up a PPPOE conection (required by ISP)
I've set to a PC_1 LAN port to have an IP of 192.168.0.1 and default
subnet mask (255.255.255.0). Other is left to default
In PPPOE connection, I've enabled Internet connection sharing, and
under a "Home networking connection" there's a name of PC_1 LAN
port...

PC_2 has a LAN adapter, and I've set it's IP to 192.168.0.5, with
default subnet mask, and other things left to default

And that's all about configuration...

Both PCs have shared folders and can see and ping each other via LAN
perfectly

Please tell me what am I missing here? Should I enter something on
PC_2 in Internet Explorer under Connections -> Local area network
settings?

Hi Ges,
You didn't elaborate much on your hardware which used in the Connection, are
you sharing this connection or adding to a router/Modem another PC?.

Here are some steps to perform and hopefully you will get Internet Connection
sharing up and running:
How to set up a ICS:
Hardware:
- Tow Computers
- The Host have Two NICs
- Cross-Over cable (if you will not use a hub with 10base-T/100base-T,
cat5, patch cable)
- Client have a NIC installed and all TCP/IP, DNS configured to get the
IP Auto.
- Enabling the ICS on both the Host and the Client

1 - How to set the Host:
You need to set the Host first as the Host will play the Distributor Role in
the ICS so you need to
set up correctly to allow ICS;

Click Start >> Control Panel >> Network and internet connections >> Network
Connections then Right click My network paces
and select Properties.
Here you should see or have two internet connection one for your Internet
connection and one for your local Area Network (LAN).
Right click Internet Connection and select properties.
On the Properties Window click on Advanced Tab and check these boxes:
Internet Connection Sharing:
[ ] Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet
Connection
[ ] Allow other Network users to control or Disable the hared Internet
Connection.
Click [OK] to Confirm your settings and close the Internet connection Window.

2 - Setting up the Client:
The same Go to the Control panel and Network Connections >> here at least
you should have one Internet connection Icon or Service
Installed, if not then your NIC or hardware not installed and you need to
install it configure it.
On the Local Area Network Right click and select properties.
Under general tab Highlight the Internet Protocol and click properties.

* Client for Microsoft Networks
* Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) 9If you don't have those then install
them)
Make sure the Machine getting an Automatic IP, DNS then click Advanced and
make sure also that there is not an old settings and all the DNS, WINS IP
filtering are all empty and there are no entries.

Thanks for detailed explanation, but problem still exists. This about
setting everything to Automatic is probably the key - if I set IP on
both PCs on automatic, I get yellow triangle on network connection on
both PCs and nothing works, not even file sharing or pinging. Only way
I've ever managed for LAN to work on WinXP Pro SP2, was to give an IP
to LAN adapter...

To describe a bit better my LAN configuration:
PC_1 and PC_2 are connected via crossover cable. When I set a fixed IP
adres on both PCs (192.168.0.1 on PC_1 and 192.168.0.5 on PC_2) they
see each other... When I use automatic IP setup, as I said, I get
yellow triangle warning on network connection between PCs
Both PCs have WinXP Pro with SP2 on it

PC_1 set IP to 192.168.0.1 with 255.255.255.0 as subnet mask, also
set DEFAULT GATEWAY as 192.168.0.1

PC_2 set IP to 192.168.0.5 with 255.255.255.0 as subnet mask,
also set DEFAULT GATEWAY as 192.168.0.1

Make sure to set the default gateway the same as your PC_1 connection
sharing computer, as this is what tells your computer where to get the
internet connection.

Thanks, but still didn't help

One my friend told me that maybe a DNS is a problem. I've set it to
automatic but it doesn't work. Can I write some fixed value, like one
for IP, and if so, which one?

yes, a DNS was a problem! I've solve it by finding a DNS of my ISP.
Everything now works fine

Once again, thanks everybody for your help!

Cheers!
