WinXP problem with Canon PowerShot A70

Hi,

I have a Canon PowerShot A70, and I usually connect it to a Win XP Home
edition.
Everything was working fine until about a week ago.

Since then, whenever I connect it to the computer (via USB) I get the
little sound saying the camera WinXP recognized a device, but nothing
else happens. I look in the "remove devices" window, and there's no
camera there. I open "my computer" and under "imaging devices" or
whatever, it's there. But when I try to view it's properties, or get
the pictures, it opens the "connecting to device" message, and just
hangs there until it says "imaging device is busy."

The "autoplay" window which uses to pop up comes up sometimes, but with
no options with which to view the pictures. Canon software doesn't get
the pics either.

I checked my camera with another computer, and another camera on my
computer, all other combinations work fine. It's just my camera with my
computer.

Canon's web site was of no help.

Any suggestions??

Thanx,
Omer.

I would uninstall and reinstall the software for the camera. Also
remove the camera from the Device Manager (hidden items as well).

Thanx for the suggestion,
but it didn't help.

Now the computer recognizes a canon camera (generic, not A70), but
still gives the same error mistakes.

Any more suggestions?

btw, 1. it now opens the "autoplay" window asking me to choose which
aaplication to use to view the files on the camera, but there are no
applications on the window. It's empty. 2. when I go to the window for
disconnecting hardware (the one you use for unplugging USB devices), I
see my CD/DVD player there. I honestly can't remember if it was there
before, and it seems weird to me that it would be there, since it's an
internal drive which came with my laptop. Does this strike anyone else
as weird?

I would contact Canon at this moment for more help.

Check if "Browse" works and if you can select the Canon software from
here.

I tried to avoid the whole story but:
I'm currently in India, with a laptop and camera I bought in Europe. I
tried contacting Canon via their website, but it didn't amount to
anything. I really don't want to have to wait till I get back home to
fix it.

If there's nothing more to try, I can accept it. But I'll be more happy
if I can get it fixed. I know my way around computers, btw, don't be
afraid to send me diving in the registry or something, as long as it
won't harm my laptop some more.

Thanx again,
Omer.

PS, and the "browse" button is not available.
