WinXP Pro SP1 fatal error

I built a new PC and I've tried twice to install SP1. Both times, it gets so
far and then return the BSD, giving an error message something like:
machine_execute_error
Windows has shut down to protect your computer. If you've received this
error before, make sure all of the devices are properly installed, start in
safe mode, etc., etc.

So, what now? I can't get certain updated drivers to work without SP1 and
SP1 won't finish installing.
Cheez, building the PC was a walk in the park compared with gettin WXPro to
work.

Update:
When I tried installing Noton Sytem Works Pro 2004, it gets as far as
showing it's installing NAV and then the BSOD pops up. The error message is
something like machine_execute_exception, whatever the hell that means.
This is the same message I got when trying to load WinXP SP1. DX9 went on
with no hitches, as did the drivers for my video card and the mobo and
LavaSoft AdAware SE 6.
Until I can get that puppy fixed, I'm running naked.
Any help would be appreciated.
