XP Pro SP1 clean install fails On ASMS error - different HW and me

I recently purchased a HP zv6007us. It came loaded with XP Home SP2. I want
XP Pro but only have a full and an upgrade disk with SP1, so had to boot from
CD and do a clean install. Long story short I get through the "DOS" portion
of setup just fine but at the "39 minutes left" point of the GUI install
after first automatic reboot I get a Cyclic Redundancy Check Criticle setup
error ASMS could not be read.

I have already returned the initial machine and have a new one. I tried both
the Upgrade XP Pro SP1 and Full XP Pro SP1 disks on both machines. I get the
exact same error each time.

Any clues how to get past this error, or do I jst say screw it and get a
different PC?
