I've been trying to upgrade a Win98SE computer to WinXp.
The error I get pops up when the WinXP intallation process
in copying the installation files to the C drive. When it
is finished copying a screen pops up stating:
"Windows unable to read from or write to drive C. If
virus programs are running turn them off and try again."
I recently uninstalled Norton from the computer and
anything associated files from the computer. When I saw
this error I tried to run ScanDisk and this error popped
up stating:
"ScanDisk could not continue because your computer does
not have enough available memory."
I tried running the Disk Defragmenter afterwards and this
error popped up:
"Windows cannot defragment this drive because it has been
locked by a disk utility"
I looked up the ScanDisk error and found a solution by
fixing corrupt FAT tables, but it referred to a problem in
WinME so I was hesitant to try.
I looked up the Defrag error and it stated the problem was
due to Windows being on a hard drive larger than 8GB
(which it is at about 40GB) or running Windows on a very
large hard disk that has a default Windows cluster size of
32KB (I don't know the cluster size for the computer,
FAT32?) The solution was to upgrade to WinXP (which I
can't do) or contact the manufacturer of the third-party
hard-disk tool (I don't know if I used a third-party hard-
disk tool)
I don't know what the problem here is, if you have any
advice that would be great. THX
