WINxp Home to Pro

I have WINxp Home Edition in my PC which I registered with
MS. I now have the WINxp Pro which I would like to
install. Can I just install the Pro over the Home? Also I
was just curious - will your PC self distruct if you fail
to register your software within the thirty day grace
period?

Im afraid I cant help you with the issue about putting Winxp pro on top of
home, but for a guess I would say you could.

But about the self destruct thing after the 30 days... no it doesnt :) Your
computer wont self destruct or anything, but it will lock you out of it.
Windows wont let you logon, apart from in Safe Mode (I dont know if that was
intentional or not by microsoft).

You should be safe putting pro on top of home, just as long as you make sure
you do put it on the home installation, and not on a seperate one like I
did - whoopps.

Cya, and good luck!

to upgrade home which I said yes to, also I have the full
editionj of XP Pro not the upgrade.

Hi, Don.

Lots of misconceptions in your post. ;^}

Yes, you can use the WinXP Pro CD-ROM to upgrade from WinXP Home Edition.

There's a BIG difference between Registration and Activation!

Windows Product Activation (WPA) is the method by which Microsoft protects
against piracy and enforces their long-time user agreement by which you
agree to install Windows on just ONE computer. If you don't activate within
the time period, Windows will no longer boot, but your computer does not
self-destruct. You can reinstall WinXP as often as you like on the one
computer, but you can't install it on a second machine unless you uninstall
it from the first.

Registration relates to the USER, not the COMPUTER. It is entirely
voluntary. If you choose to register, you will give your name and other
personal information to Microsoft. None of this information is furnished by
the WPA process.

For more details on WPA, go to
http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/basics/activation/

Greetings --

Of course, there are no iron-clad, 100% guarantees when it comes
to updating any kind of computer software, much less an operating
system. WinXP is designed to install and upgrade the existing
operating system while simultaneously preserving your data and
translating as many personalized settings as possible. The process is
designed to be, and normally is, quite painless. That said, things can
go wrong, in a small number of cases. If your data is at all
important to you, back it up before proceeding.

If you don't activate within the requisite 30 days, the PC will
only boot into Safe Mode until you do activate.
