Registration w/borrowed WinXP CD

Is there a way to buy a license for a borrowed copy of WinXP Pro ?

A friend who uses his computer for his home based business, recently had his
system damaged by a virus or malware.

His computer is a Gateway, who said that 18 months ago he failed to do
something and now they won't send him a fresh OS unless he pays $200, well he
can buy a fresh edition of WinXP Pro for less than that.

Anyway a technician said that he needs some files off the WinXP Pro install
CD that were damaged by the virus/malware.

So, I diverted a fresh box of WinXP Pro with the understanding that he
cannot register it but use it to get the files from.

Well getting the files failed and he installed WinXP Pro and was back
working later that evening.

The box of WinXP Pro is now in the hands of the paying party but we need to
get some sort of license or registration for this Gateway system which will
time out in 30 days.

TIA

In general, one cannot mix-and-match different versions of Windows XP Pro.
And this was pretty obvious. And if the version of Windows XP Pro that is
now on the friend's Gateway is an OEM version, then its license has already
been legitimately used due to activation (if it were done). The friend might
as well reimburse you for that copy of Windows XP Pro. OTOH, if the Win XP
were the retail version, then it must first be uninstalled from the Gateway
and returned to you; the friend has several options at obtaining his own
copy of XP Pro, i.e., from Gateway, off-the-shelf OEM or retail, etc., or
give you a likewise replacement.

You have not included pertinent details such as what type of XP - retail,
OEM or Volume license, and did your friend install with the product key on
the sticker attached to his computer or did he use the product key that was
with whatever you gave him. Also did he activate it?

You keep on using the term registration. Registration is optional, is of no
value to the user, and has no impact on how the license is used. Activation
is the issue.

You also said, "I diverted a fresh box of WinXP Pro". What does that mean?
You have him an unused copy of XP Pro in it's original box? If that's the
case this suggests it's a retail version.

So if what you gave him is a retail copy, it doesn't matter if he has
activated it or not. He can either pay you for it, or uninstall it from his
computer and you can then reuse that license.

To uninstall it he either has to format the drive where XP is installed or
buy a copy of XP Pro retail and do a repair install to change the product
key. Then you can reuse that license on another computer.

On the other hand if what you gave him was an OEM version, and it has been
activated, then by the OEM license it is tied to that computer and can't be
moved to a different one. So he needs to pay you for that copy. If it
hasn't been activated yet, then uninstall XP by one of the means above.
Then that license can be used on a different computer.

Next time please include all the relevant details.

Yes, this is a retail version, and yes he has not Activated and I think that
the best solution is to aquire another box of retial and install/repair and
use the new product key and activate it.

The box is now installed on the system that it was intended to be and will
be activated there, so I think that the first install will time out.

If I understand correctly, OEM is designed for the one computer that it was
sold for however a retail can be installed and moved to another system if
need be after changing the product key or uninstalling it.

Yes, an OEM version is tied, by the license agreement, to the first computer
on which it's installed/activated, and can't be moved to a different
computer. A retail version can be moved if it's first uninstalled from
whatever computer it's currently on. To uninstall you would format the
drive that has XP on it; an equivalent method would be to do a repair
install, inputting a different license key, so now the new key is the one
being used on that installation. The original license can now be activated
on another system. The repair install has to be done with the same type of
XP, i.e. if XP Pro retail is on the system, then do the repair with an XP
Pro retail CD and license.
