Registration Problem

I have a Dell computer and so does my friend. Her kids screwed up her
computer and lost the cd's.

I installed my Dell Winxp Home CD on her computer. I noticed we had the
same registration numbers.

She has the Genuine Microsoft numbers on a sticker on her computer case.

I checked around and did the registry edit so the validation tool would
popup and it did.

The problem is, it had no registration number there so I could continue.

I called Microsoft validation center and the guy had me do a command and
he said it was registered. I explained that I didn't want to have a
problem since both computers had my registration info on them and told
him again that I had a valid registration from her computer sticker.

He said don't worry about it and something about "they" would ask for
the registration. His English wasn't the best, but that's what he said.

Should I just forget about it or what ?

Thanks

You use the Dell cd together with the code that is on the case sticker
If you used your case code there will eventually be problems

That's what I think. I formatted the drive and installed to computer
"B" with the OEM from computer "A".

I was shocked to see the registration already there from the install cd.
I added no registration information al all.

The system would not let me change it and MS said forget it.

I'm highly irritated since the install was valid to a computer that has
an MS sticker on it with the code.

You can reinstall XP on a Dell computer with any Dell CD that matches
the version installed on the original machine (XP Home, Pro, Media
Center). Activation (which is the part that is mandatory, not
registration) has already been done for you a long time ago by Dell.
When you do a clean install this way, you are not asked to enter a
Product Key, although the Product Key on the sticker on the computer is
your individual license for Windows. This sticker would be important to
have if you needed to do a clean install and ony had a generic OEM
install disk instead of a Dell-branded one. Otherwise it doesn't come
into play in the clean installation with Dell media scenario.

You do not need to register with Microsoft. So basically this is a
non-issue and nothing for you to be irritated or concerned about.
