Desktop with WInXP Home SP2. Cannot respolve names to IP in normal mode. In
safe mode everything works fine. I can ping by www name until machine is
fully booted.

Flushed DNS in safe mode.
Tried Winsock repair
Checked for malware problems.
Checked host files, they are instact and fine.

Interesting that when attempting to flush DNS in normal mode, get message
"Cannot locate DNS chache". Also unable to perform network connection repair
as it indicates unable to flush DNS.

Any suggestions welcome.

Thank,

JamesO

Check the Event Log after a normal boot and look for messages about
system services.

Disable all non-Microsoft programs and services in Msconfig and
reboot. One-by-one, enable those programs and services and reboot.
Keep doing it until one causes DNS resolution to fail. Then, you've
found the problem.

Steve,

Thanks for the great suggestions, I will try these when I can get access to
the machine again. I am somewhat at a loss here and I really want to find out
what has caused the DNS to be blocked. One other thougt was to just do a
system restore, however, this may only be a temporary solution.

I have never used system restore, but I have a few questions about how it
works.
Will it impact files or software that has recently been saved or installed?
Can you restore back say 2 weeks, then jump back to the current point if the
2 week restore point does not solve the problem?

Thanks in advance.

You're welcome, James.

I've used System Restore many times, on my own computers and on my
clients' computers, to recover from problems. You don't have to know
what went wrong or how to fix it -- you just need to find a restore
point made before the problem occurred.

When you restore the computer to an earlier time, software that you
installed after that time disappears. System Restore doesn't affect
data such as files in the My Documents folder, Outlook Express E-mail,
and Internet Explorer favorites.

Any changes that System Restore makes are completely reversible. You
can un-do a restore if it doesn't solve the problem.
