WinXP freezes

R

Robert Ginn

A new out-of-the-box copy of WindowsXP Home loaded on a new 80Gb hard drive
on a new motherboard freezes up after running for a few minutes or less.
The freeze occurs on a mouse action (selecting an icon or clicking one, for
instance) and during program run (Windows Tour just freezes after about 15
seconds).

Also, on startup, the boot goes to the WinXP logo screen, then black, then a
mouse cursor arrow shows and the boot freezes. After Reset, it goes through
the same procedure, but then an hourglass shows next to the arrow and boot
continues normally. Then a freeze occurs, usually within a few minutes of
operation.

Running an ECS L4VXA2 motherboard with WD 80Gb hard drive and 256Mb DDR
266Mhz ram by Kingston. The board has an on-board sound card.

It took several tries to get XP loaded---setup would freeze at any of
several points. Entered the product code six times. Or was it seven?
Finally got to Windows and still have the above freeze problems.

Any ideas?

Thanks for any help.

Look for Error messages in the system section of Event Viewer, Make an exact
note of the precise text of any error message. Minor discrepancies can make
it harder to search for information about the error message.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, Event
Viewer.
When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event ID,
Source
and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click
for further information and you can copy using copy and paste.

(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the
error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button resembling
two
pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now start your
message
(email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This will paste the
info from the
Event Viewer Error Report complete with links into the message. Make sure
this is
the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer.
