I hope someone can help. I cannot start winxp. After bios is loaded i
get "windows is starting up" message and that's it. It seems that
recovery console is the only solution. Fixboot didn't help and before
starting fixmbr i would like to back up my data. I can access this disk
from another disk but i cannot access my data or copy it because i have
password on my admin account. What can i do.
And what could be the reason that i cannot start chkdsk /f and chkdsk
c: /f from recovery console. Chkdsk /p and chkdsk /r work. Is chkdsk /f
even necessary as i can access this disk from another disk.
Thanks
antonio

Hit F8 just before windows loads and see if you can startup in safe mode...

if you can get to safe mode...you may be able to fix the problem from
there...

try such things as removing all items from startup in msconfig etc

btw: the recovery console will not give you the chkdsk /f option...
you need to run chkdsk /r when in the recovery console

It doesn't sound like there was anything wrong with your MBR, more like a
driver conflict/disk problem.

Can you start in safe mode? Tap F8 while booting until you see a menu giving
you start options.

Run chkdsk with the drive connected to another machine if you cannot boot in
safe mode.
Assuming your not using XP encryption, all you need to do once the drive is
connected to another machine, log in using an administrator account, then
take control of your old files through the security settings tab on the
properties page of the file/s you want to claim.

You could try doing as repair install;
Begin to install from the XP CD as usual, bypass the recovery console, and
setup will tell you it has detected windows already installed, and ask if
you want to repair it. Choose this option. You won't loose your data, but
will need to install any patches again.

HTH, and a bit more detail on any hardware/software changes you made prior
to this event would be good.

Thanks philo. Safe Mode and Last Known Good didn't help. Winxp doesn't
go any further in safe mode.

Thanks ms. I cannot start in safe mode. I ran chkdsk /p and chkdsk /r
from recovery console but it didn't help. Prior to this event i made
system restore and deinstall some programs like startup manager Ace
Utilities, Nero 7 Demo, AntiVir.
Now i will try you suggestions.
Thanks a lot

Take ownership of the files and folders:

HOW TO: Take Ownership of a File or Folder in Windows XP

Or from Start | Help and Support type ownership in the search box.

I repaired winxp installation using winxp cd but after restart i get
this message: "Setup is being restarted" and " Please insert the winxp
cd and click ok". What can i do. It seems that click on OK will start
winxp inslallation?
I can access this disk from another disk but i cannot access data or
copy it because i have password on admin account. I didn't manage to
change it through the properties tab. There is no encryption i guess.
Thanks
