WinTV tuner with Radeon 9600XT under XP - but no video!

Bruno

Simply put:

The setup is this:
Win XP
Asus Radeon 9600xt
WinTV GO FM PCI
Cable TV connection
WDM drivers downloaded straight from the Hauppauge web site.

The problem is this:

I connect the coax (straight from the wall) to the TV-in (coax) on the
WinTV card.

I then run WinTV2000. I ask it to autoscan for channels. WinTV2000
proceeds to detect the 80 or so live channels in the 125 channels in our
cable system (Cablevision).

Then - no video, no pictures! Not even a hint of a picture of a station in
any of the channels.

I try the Asus Digital VCR application (essentially the same functionality)
- same result.

No problem with the cable service itself. I plug the same coax into my VCR
and my 125 channels are all there, bright and clear.

For good measure, I connected the composite out from the VCR to the
composite in on the WinTV; no luck.

I tried tech support at Hauppauge - very courteous but ulimately unhelpful.

I must be missing something fundamental, but I can't figure out what. This
problem bugs me to no end - I'm not a great tv fan, but it is now a matter
of principle!

Any ideas?

It sounds like your overlay control is messed up. Did you just upgrade to XP
or did you just get the TV card? Have you tried re installing DX 9? I have
the same TV card that you have and it works fine for me. I didn't have to
set anything when I installed it with my clean install of XPPro. When you
tested the line in did you make sure that the card was set to line in?
Usually you don't need to do this because the card switches automatically,
but you should check just to be sure. Did you by chance have your TV or
another monitor set up as a second display? Because if you where watching
something on the TV that used overlay, you would have to turn off overlay on
your monitor. If you have go check under
Properties\Settings\Advanced\Display. There's a toggle control that you can
play with to see if this is the problem. JLC

I have a similar problem with my AIW Radeon 7500. It would help me if you
could check a few things. Do you get any audio when you try to view a TV
signal? I do and I was wondering if you were getting the same symptoms.
Also, if you try to watch TV with it, you can capture a picture. Do you get
a picture when you try this? I do, but that would not make sense if it were
a HW problem, so I know it is some sort of SW problem (for me at least). I
have tried everything I can think of to make it work, but I have been
unsuccessful.

When you get it going, could you please let the list know what you figured
out?

Thanks,
Bob Young

Sorry about the delay in responding, I was away for a couple of days.
But here goes:

This occured to me to, but I have no idea what I can do about that.
Did you just upgrade to XP or did you just get the TV card?

No, this is a new (homebuilt) computer with win XP home freshely
installed, so no upgrade is involved. I bought the tuner card later
and just installed it.
Have you tried re installing DX 9?

Yes and I ran the DirectX Diagnostic Tool - all tests passed with
flying colors.
When you
tested the line in did you make sure that the card was set to line in?

I did not because, again, I have no clue as to how to do that.

I did it in several ways, that is with and without a second display
and, when working with a second display, with the monitor and the tv
exchanging first and second display positions. There was no video on
the monitor (as either the only or first display) or on the TV (again,
as either only or first display).

Still sad :)

Good question which I didn't check before. I connected the audio-out
from the tuner card to the audio in in the video card. No sound. So I
guess we don't have the same symptoms.

No, when I try that, I get a message (this is from Asus Digital VCR):
"Operation Failed". It sounds like we have different problems.
When you get it going, could you please let the list know what you figured
out?

Definetly and please do the same.
