i am unable to go to a select number of web sites. i was
told that i may have a corupt winsock file, but neither
my puter manufactorure nor my isp will help me correct
this. any ideas??

It would have been nice if you posted which "select" sites that you
are unable to go to. Perhaps the sites are at fault. By posting
the information, we can check them out to see if it's your setup or
the site itself.
