WINS server set-up question

Edward Bernard

hello,
can anyone out there confirm how two WINS servers on the
same subnet should be configured, please? the production
boxes are set like so:
WINS server 1
WINS tab > WINS addresses, in order of use:
WINS server 1 IP
WINS server 2 IP

WINS server 2
WINS tab > WINS addresses, in order of use:
WINS server 2 IP
WINS server 1 IP

is this correct? i read somewhere (and cannot find the
article since) that the WINS servers should be pointed to
themselves only, like so -

WINS server 1
WINS tab > WINS addresses, in order of use:
WINS server 1 IP

WINS server 2
WINS tab > WINS addresses, in order of use:
WINS server 2 IP

any clarification on what is the preferred set-up (and
why?) would be greatly appreciated, or at leat if anyone
can comment how things are set-up in their shops would be
very welcome.

thanks for the help.

Mine are setup where each WINS server points to itself for primary and
secondary to another one. They are set up with replication. Client
settings are pushed on by DHCP.

Not sure if there is a recommended but I haven't noticed issues with my
clients.

this is how the production boxes are set-up here and i
have noticed a difference between the two databases by
about 200 records. i finally found (it took a long time,
though) an MS KB that says you should point the WINS
server to itself only and no secondaries should be
listed. otherwise, you could see a disjointed database,
which is what i suspect i have. i made the changes today
and will post back after a couple days and let everyone
know how it turns out.

Interesting I will look that up! Thanks for pointing it out. In the mean
time make sure you setup push/pull replication on both of them, not just
one. Check event logs for replications.
