WinMail causing me a headache

Everytime I attempt to start Windows Mail, I get literally thousands of
spawned WinMail.exe *32 processes. Eventually my system succumbs to running
out of 4GB of physical memory and over 15GB virtual memory and crashes. No
error message is ever displayed. After checking the Event Viewer after hard
reboot, I see the following:

General Tab:
Faulting application WinMail.exe, version 6.0.6000.16386, time stamp
0x4549b0f9, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 6.0.6000.16386, time stamp

0xd330, application start time 0x01c7821e0a5ee87f.

any help would be appreciated as I would like to use WinMail again. If I
have forgotten to add any info that would be needed, please let me know.

OS: Vista Home Premium 64-bit (fully updated as of 4/18/07)
CPU: AMD Athlon FX-62 (AM2)
Mem: 4GB DDR2 667

Thanks,

What is running when you boot the computer prior to starting WinMail? That
would seem to me to be at issue. See www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

Also check Start | Search and type msconfig and see what the startup items
are and the non-MS services running at startup.

WinMail behaves the same way regardless of if any programs are opened and/or
closed before starting WinMail. As far as the startup items :

Windows Defender
NVIDIA Driver Helper Service, Version 158.18
NVIDIA Compatible Windows 2000 Display driver, Version 158.18
NVIDIA Media Center Library
DAEMON Tools
WMPNSCFG
AsusStartupHelp
Java(TM) Platform SE 6 U1
Adobe Acrobat
Adobe Reader Synchronizer
QuickTime (Disabled)

I selected the Services Tab and checked the Hide all Microsoft services and
only 1 remained.

InstallDriver Table Manager Macrovision Corporation Stopped

Thanks for the quick response.

As far as I can tell, the only mandatory entry in your Startup items
is Windows Defender. I nuked all the NVIDIA stuff in mine, and
everything still works. The rest are sucking up resources
unnecessarily. Disable them one at a time, reboot, and verify
that things still work.

Ok, I tried that and even after everything(include Windows Defender) was
disabled(Defender is re-enabled now.), everything still works with the
exception of WinMail.

I don't see any anti-virus listed. Are you running one? Which?

None of those startup items should have an impact.

Go to c:\program files\windows mail\ and click on WinMail.exe (it might be a
hidden file) and then see if it starts okay. It could be the shortcut is
messed up.

Then I'm out of ideas as to what may be causing your issue.
If I was in your shoes, I'd reinstall Vista from scratch, the
32-bit version this time.

Excellent. that works great although now i have another problem but it is one
that is answered in another post. Do you know how I could fix the shortcut in
the Start Menu right above pinned items to work properly?

S

Steve Cochran

Right click on the shortcut and look at the properties and see if you can
fix it. If not, then create a new shortcut and replace the one that is
messed up.
