Sorry, I hope you don't think I have the answers here but what you are having
problems with is "exactly" my problem! I bought a new computer a few months
ago and yet I'm still often going back to my old one (with no cd rom!) that
has xp because I cannot literally even touch anything on my desktop even.
When I'm not in Windows Explorer at all - just on the desktop - over and over
again I keep getting "Windows has encountered an error" etc, and I mean
literally ever minute or so, no longer. I recall reading somewhere that "dep"
may have something to do with it. (Whatever that really means, I don't know,
but it's like data execution prevention.) It stops some programs from running
if they think they are not safe which is a little hard to understand when it
does it to the most important programs that you use. It does say that dep can
be enabled or disabled but there is a risk of virus attacks more. Big help, I
know! I have to say I don't like Vista at all and want to learn to multi-boot
and replace it with XP. (They say it's not for the faint-hearted so I'm
wary!) Please, doesn't even Microsoft know the answer? I've watched my pc sit
on the floor for the past few months off and on because I can't work with it.
For now, I chose a workaround I guess, and downloaded "Universal Explorer"
which is great, doesn't crash, but I can't leave it to go to my desktop
either. Hope somebody out there can help us all. Good luck!
