Windows Explorer has stopped working

All of the sudden Windows Explorer keeps crashing every time I close it. I
have walked thru some of the other suggestions listed in the groups, without
any positive outcome. This issue does seem to go away when I'm running in
safe mode.

I'm running Windows Vista Business. Thank you any help in advance.

Here is my event log information:

Faulting application Explorer.EXE, version 6.0.6000.16386, time stamp

seems to me that some explorer extension is causing the problem

go here http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html and use that app
to disable temporarily all non microsoft shell extensions that load up
with windows explorer. See if it fixes the situation.

You do that by right clicking on the pink ones and selecting disable.

Then with the trial and error method start enabling them one by one again
try to pinpoint which one is causing the problem and keep it disabled..

you might also want to scan for spyware using the built windows defender and
"spybot search & destroy " and "adaware"
that you can download from www.download.com if you search for those 2 names.

ALSO try disabling your antivirus and see if this does anything

ALSO go to START and type MSCONFIG press enter, from the startup tab
remove anything you might not really need.

tell me if this helps

Thai Berry,

Thank you for your reply. I've seen other posts with the same
troubleshooting steps, and I've had no luck. I tried all of your suggested
steps below and still have the same issue.

Any other suggestions?

yes... download these 2 MS tools

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/processesandthreads/processexplorer.mspx

Now listen carefully with the above program running select> VIEW> Lower pane
and then again VIEW > LOWER PANE VIEW> DLLS

click with your mouse on the explorer.exe process and take a look at what
dlls are being loaded with it...

you can right click on the dlls and select search online... see if anything
strange is being loaded (this does need some experience)

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/Utilities/AutoRuns.mspx

this will show everything that loads with windows..

again troubleshooting like this does need experience but try to see if
anything strange is loading with windows somewhere

Also try creating a new account in windows... a second user

see if the explorer problem is there too...
