WinFAX Pro trouble with service pack 3

S

ScottNOFX

I have used WinFAX Pro 10.0 for many years now.
After I installed service pack 3 WinFax will not allow me to change settings
such as area code, phone number. When I try to edit these items a general
fault error pops up.

Any ideas?

WinFax is no longer offered or supported by Symantec.

Thanks,
Scott

The last sentence - more than anything else - means you may be out of luck.
It may be time to find a different computer fax application - one that is
still worked on and supported by the company that sells it.

Are you running the latest version of WinFax?

I beleive that is 10.04...
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...eg=hm&lg=en&ct=us&ExpandSection=4,1#_Section4

Which leads you to:
ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/products/winfax_pro/ver10.04/updates/Winfax_10.04.zip

You might try updating WinFax to see if it helps - although it won't have
fixes for SP3 changes.

The reason I ask about your exact version:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...0092516473104?OpenDocument&seg=hm&lg=en&ct=us

10.00 was not supported in Windows XP. Nor was 10.01. Does not mean they
would not have worked - but could mean you might (sooner or later) run into
issues.

No, I would have to purchase that update as the free update from Symantec
10.04 only updates 10.03
I am afraid to purchase the new version as it might have same issue.

Do you have any suggestions on a fax program? I really did like WinFax, so
something close to it would be great.

Thanks for the quick reply,
Scott

my suggestion is to
simply uninstall sp3
and be happy again.

in the interim i would
nag technical support
for winfax and have
them provide a patch
or workaround.

there position would
be different if you were
upgrading and not updating
the o.s.

I am a Winfax Pro user with Windows XP SP3. Is your problem with the
address book or configuring Winfax Pro?

On my copy I have some features that do not work as they should. I
think these are just the result of changes to Windows XP and not just
SP3. I am having to work around them.

There is a dedicated Winfax Pro forum here:

Hope this helps.

I also have used Winfax 10.01 for years and had to update to 10.03 to have
everything work even before updating to SP3. Suggest updating since I have
not found any product that comes close to Winfax Pro.

Uh huh.

At $30 a year he's better off finding a XP compatible than a workaround
[which may or may not work] on a product that is considered dead....

G

Doesm't solve the problem or anything. Come 18 months from now, when
Microsoft kills off any security updates for SP2, what does he do? He won't
be too happy....

I think he knew that Win XP may not be 100% compatible with WinFax.

I don't think Symantec even has tech support for WinFax [amybe except paid
support] as it's a dead product. If there is support, he'll have to pay for
it, which ain't worth it.

It's still a workaround which may not function 100%.

actually, it's free and its not a workaround. It's a solution to the

actually, a workaround would be suggesting another piece of software or an
alternate method of achieving the same task thus bypassing or ignoring the
original problem.

But if you go to http://www.getfaxing.com/support.htm it wants $40 for
fixes. At that price - and just for support and fixes, might as well just buy
an app that is known to work with Win XP [SP3] and the company will continue
to support it with future versions.

Unsure why Symantec dropped WinFax. People still fax and by PC makes things
easier.

Anything you do in this case (WinFax 10 issues) will be a *work-around*.
Whether you attempt to get support from a third party, replace the software
with something else, etc. WinFax 10.x is *no longer supported* - period.

A work-around *is* a "solution" - just not a long-term/final solution that
fixes the fundamental issue with the actual product - just side-steps it,
gets around it (thus "work-around"). In this case - if there even is a
fundamental issue with the actual product in question - it is *unlikely*
that it will ever be fixed because, again, it is obsolete/unsupported.

You might want to try Windows XP's own fax program. It's not as sophisticated as
Winfax Pro 10, but it does the job for my limited usage. I also run Office XP
and it will utilize Outlook's contacts.

Basically you can send a quick cover page w/o attachments. If attachments are
required, you first send them to the fax printer which then launches the fax
wizard to complete the cover page. There is a simple Fax Console which contains
the Incoming, Inbox, Outbox, and Sent Items folders.

When set for Manual Answer, a prompt appears with a soft ring tone for all
incoming calls.

Windows XP's own fax program would be like going back to the Stone Age.

Works for me.

I used to use WinFax Pro v10.02 with Win2K Pro. In fact I started using Winfax
when it was made by Delrina and supplied as part of a suite of communication
applications.

The fax program supplied with Windows XP does a good job. I've used others,
which were supplied with fax modems, that were not as good.

For users that only need to send or receive a fax occasionally, it's all one
really needs.
