I'd wonder if it wasn't just around midnight but exactly
12:00:00 by the computer clock, that it's set to come on at
that time by default in the bios but if it hadn't until
recently, the feature had been inadvertently enabled. Check
your bios settings.
Many thanks for the advice. Last night I unplugged the broadband cable and
in the morning the computer was not on. I then looked at the 'Automatic
Updates' settings and it is set to update everyday at 1am. Its now set to
update once per week. I think this should fix it.
