WindowsXP Boot problem

Hey all,

I have a friend thats having some pc problems and thought someone here could
help.

Ok, he has WindowsXP home, preinstalled, so he has no XP CD. The other
day when he went to boot up his computer (cause he turns it off every night)
he got this error message or something similiar to it when booting...

"Fixed Disk Error....CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart" No WindowsXP screen
or nothing, just a black dos looking screen with his pc info.
We tried using my XP boot disk with no success, and we even went as far
as booting from my WindowsXP cd to run Fixboot. It successfully finished but
still no success booting from C:

Any suggestions? He thought he may have got a virus. Could that cause
this? I checked his bios and everything is configured right. I loaded FDisk
from one of my Windows98 startup disks, and it showed his NTFS partition,
set to active and everything looked right. So what could be causing this?

Also, if you try to run C:\ from A:\ it says invalid disk.
