though its not win XP question, but perhaps someone know 98 also.
The old PIII is running Win 98SE. One problem appears: windows 98 booting
process freezes when it come to windows color logo, loading
progress indicator at the bottom of the window also frozen.

So I can only press "restart", windows restart, but it loads to Startup menu
with Safe mode highlighted, then I wait a little, then its loaded into the
safe mode, then I reboot it from there, then sometimes it loaded normally,
sometimes freezes again. No error messages is shown. Internet connection is
missing. When I run Winipcfg utility and try release / renew Network
adapter - the utility freezes/hungup. The hard drive is almost full, free
space is 1,7Gb(8.8%)
from 19,9Gb. System show, that near 75% of system resources is free.

Your old Win98 machine is dying. It could be your hard drive, your
motherboard, your RAM, or all. Time to back up any data you can get and put
the machine in the trash (responsibly - check computer disposal laws in
your area).

PC works flawlessly since 2001. Sadly, but no possibilities to backup,
execept to copy something to USB flash drive.
Can the problem be localized and fixed? Maybe error in registry? Too low
hard drive space?

Nothing lasts forever. Of course, I am giving you a diagnosis without being
able to do hands-on testing. You should not take what I have written as a
definitive diagnosis. If you want to be sure, take the machine to a
reputable computer repair shop (not a BigComputerStore/GeekSquad type of
place).

The problem cannot be "localized and fixed" if this is failing hardware.
Software solutions ("error in registry", "too low hard drive space") cannot
fix failing hardware.

As for backup, copy to USB drive or pull the drive and slave/attach it to a
working computer to copy off the data. If you don't have another computer,
take this one to the above-mentioned computer tech and have them do it for
you.
