is my computer ready to go from windows 98 2nd to
windows xp.
i have a pentium 3 with 256 ram 667 mhz and 10 gb space on
hard disk. help me along to the big jump.

I'm probably not the best person to be giving advice,
especially since I'm having problems of my own that are
similar to yours, but if you have 98 installed, it should
be pretty straight forward. What you need to do is go
into your BIOS setting and change it so your computer will
boot from your CD drive. Then insert the XP disk and
reboot. Your computer will now boot from the XP disk. Then
just follow the instructions to install the new OS. Here

The specs you mention are adeuate to run XP, although you won't
get blazing performance.

But to be sure, run the upgrade advisor at Run the Microsoft
Upgrade Advisor at

You should download and run Microsoft's Upgrade Advisor (get it from the
MS site). Personally, I think your computer is probably OK, although
not for anything that requires serious processor power (newest games,
cad-type programs, Photoshop, etc.). If you are just doing email, web
browsing, office apps, you should be fine. The main problem I see is
the size of your hard drive. XP itself is going to take about 5GB,
doesn't leave a lot of room for programs and data. You might want to
get a bigger hard drive.

Rubbish! The partition I have loaded XP onto is 4 GB and WITH office XP I
STILL have 1.75 GB free.
