Slow performance opening and closing programs

alxrays

I recently re-formatted my hard drive, reloaded Windows XP Home Edition SP2.
I only have AVG Anti Virus and the regular Windows Defender and Firewall
running.I have a few not many programs installed and 101 GB of FREE Space out
of 110. GB on my Hard drive. My Processor is Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.53GHz
512MB PC1066 RDRAM (2x 256 modules)
However, Every time I try to open or close a program it takes quite awhile.
It was never like this before-
Anyone have any suggestions besides getting a more up to date computer? It
is a Dell 8250 bought in 2003.

Hi alxrays,
try cleaning up your hard-drive by 1)deleting the contents
of the Temporary Internet Files folder 2). deleting the contents of your
Temp directory 3). performing a defrag of your system drive. 4). checking
the running process and delete any ones you feel are not necessary. You can
do this last one by opening the msconfig.exe utility and looking at what's
due to start on boot under the StartUp tab. Usually, slow system response
has more than one cause and applying attention to a number of potential
issues is called for.

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

Have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for
Errors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any more than 48
hours ago.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties,
Hardware,Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp to Empty
your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Also select Start, All
Programs, accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp, More Options, System
Restore and remove all but the latest System Restore point. Run Disk
Defragmenter.

Hope this helps.

Did your performace problems happen *immediately* after you performed
the clean install, or did it happen a bit later?

If they happened immediately after, I would suspect bad hardware.
Perhaps one of the RAM modules isn't seated properly. But then again,
256MB is not bad for a very light load. Perhaps there's a lot of dust
inside your PC which is responsible for overheating, which can cause
performance problems. Maybe your hard drive is going. For more about
hardware troubleshooting, see:

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html

If you have *only* those programs mentioned above running, you should
not be experiencing bad performace. Then again, Windows Defender has
been known to be problematic. I would uninstall that program and use the
free versions of MBAM and SuperAntispyware instead.

What do you mean by "and Firewall"? Are you referring to the built-in
Windows Firewall?

Are you still at SP2?

Have you installed any Windows updates?

Does the slowness occur when you try to start in Safe mode?

In safe mode without networking?

Sometimes the system is delayed in starting because it's waiting on a
response from a network machine that it can't reach.

IDE harddrive? Could be it had read errors and defaulted back to PIO
access from DMA. You will find it in Device manager, IDE controllers,
Primary IDE channel, properties, Advanced Settings. If you are at PIO
instead of DMA, remove and allow reinstall to reset it.
