Windows XP (Professional) Installation

Placing the said upgrade disc in my CD-ROM resulted in
absolutely nothing...even though I believe that I have the
required hardware (i.e., Pentium III processor, VGA, 256
MB of RAM, and 1.5 GB of available hard disk space). One
possible problem however - I suspect - is that my current
Windows 98 2nd Edition operating system may be
unregistered....

Any suggestions would be MUCH APPRECIATED.

No, Win98 doesn't need to be registered. You need to set your computer
to boot from the cd-rom drive. This is done in the BIOS. Refer to your
computer manual regarding getting into the BIOS (sometimes known as
"Setup"). Then put the XP cd in the drive. There will be a prompt for
you to press the famous Any Key to boot from the cd, which you want to
do. From there, follow the instructions. You can do an upgrade
installation which should preserve your current programs and data,
although there may be problems and there's no guaranty. You should have
all your data backed up before you start. It is also a good idea to run
the Upgrade Advisor before starting. Here's a link:

Please be aware that if you do a clean install instead of an upgrade,
you will not have all your old programs and data. Post back if you need

Check the BIOS setup - hit the appropriate hot key at the initial memory
count, often DEL or a function key). In that set the Boot Order to CD
before Hard disk or floppy. This may be in a BIOS settings page, use
Page Dn to cycle the Boot Order item round to CDRom; C:;. . . or a Boot
page in which select the CD (arrow keys) and use number Pad + to push it
to the top. Then ESC and take Exit - Exit, Saving settings, and the CD
should boot
