I have been facing problem with my Windows Xp boot time ..Its running
close to 3 minutes and once I log on to my system for the last
fortnight have been facing issues with even doing simple jobs such as
copying and moving files between drives even a file size of 10 mb is
taking close to 2 minutes and it uses 100 percent of my cpu and the pf
usage is also very high.I have read a couple of posts here where they
have indicated that xp with sp 2 might be the cause but I have been
using xp with sp2 for the last 6 or7 months and am facing this for
issue for the last fortnight prior to which I reloaded my OS a week ago
..
My config is
Intel P4 1.7 Ghz
1 GB SD RAM
Geforce MX 440 12b Mb

Can some one pleas epoint me as to what is the issue with my system.

Cheers,

Are you sure you haven't set up one of your drives (be it a hard drive or a
DVD/CD drive to be a slace when it should be a master?). This will slow
things up no end.

Check all your drivers are correctly installed.

What AV are you using?

Thanks for the reply,

I am using McAfee enterprise edition along with microsoft antispyware
...

as far as setting up master or slave drives are concerned I have 2
harddisks one of 40 gig (which I am sure is the master drive though I
am not sure 100%)which is for Linux OS which I formatted thru the
windows disk management option just to see if it gives me any
difference in performance and the other hard disk of 160 gig which runs
Windows Xp. I am not sure as to how I should proceed from here would
appreciate if you can guide me or point to a link or source

I'll assume that you are defragmentating your drive, rebooting the machine,
and performing disk scans. If not, try them.

Now, check all you network connections (software and hardware). Sometimes if
you lost a network drive, copying files could slow down dramactically
eventhough the files your copying have nothing to do with the network drive..

A Fortnight ago, did somebody try to install a new program? How about
uninstall a program? Do you have a restore point to revert back to just prior
to the problem occuring?

As you correctly pointed out, since your configuration was working
correctly, something just doesn't occure out of nowhere to start causing
havoc. I would next do a spyware/malware and virus scan. Something tells me
that this is not the case. Try a registry cleaner afterwards.

Next, try to unload programs out of memory. If your memory starts to get
real low and pages a lot of programs into the swap file, copying could slow
dramatically. With what your saying, I'm not convinced that SP2 is your
problem. After you try all of the above, repost. I'm sure if I didn't help
you, somebody else can.

Thanks for the reply,

I have tried defragmenting the disks and perfrming disk scans but I
dont see a change in the performance.

Nobody has installed any applications in my system and have run the
Microsoft Antispywre and have found no spyware ..resotre point is also
not of much help.

But the only difference I find is when logging on to Windows while
earlier it used to take close to 160-180 seconds its come down to 100
-110 seconds .

Also when I am playing my Winamp and open my Windows media player
...Winamp kind of screeches to a freeze for a couple of seconds .I still
dont get it how come with 1 gig of ram and 1.7 Ghz processor the system
cant handle two media applications. I have even closed a lot of start
up applications also using the msconfig command but not much help.

Any help would be appreciated ..

Cheers

Cheers,

McAfee software does a bit of a reputation for having the "who dropped
the anchor?" effect on computer performance.

How much RAM does your system have? With McAfee installed you should
have at least 512 mb.

Good luck
