Clearing physical memory

T

thiru.y

I have been having issues with the performance of my system for the
last fortnight after searching thru blogs and posting in forums and
running a couple of memory tests I found nothing wrong .I just hapenned
to have a look at everest home edition
http://www.lavalys.com/downloads/everesthome220.zip

and ran the application .

It gives me a report indicating that 38% of y 1023 mb of physical
memory is used can somebody indicate me as to how to clear this 38% so
that the system can work faster as it used to ....

Cheers,

No, this is not your problem. Look elsewhere for its source.
Windows is designed to use all, or nearly all, your RAM all the time. If
your apps don't need it, Windows will try to find another use for it (such
as using it for cache), then give it back when the apps need it again.

Despite what some people apparently think, this is good, not bad. Unused RAM
is wasted RAM. You paid for it all, and shouldn't want to see any of it
sitting around idle and wasted.

If thats not the issue then do u think I will have to upgrade my BIOS
as it does indicate that I havent done it for the last 2 years,

Usually the way you reduce Memory Usage is to disable some of the
Apps you have Opening at Startup. Take a look
at what you really need and what you can Open as needed. Go to
Start>Run type: msconfig click Ok and select
the Startup Tab. You can uncheck those you decide to disable. I use
about the same % on 512MB of Ram.

Uhm... the only way to free up all your memory is to turn off your PC. 38%
isn't too bad actually, considering that includes Windows and any programs
you have running.

If your PC is running sluggish I'd suspect some program that you've
installed is running in the background. Click START->RUN and enter MSCONFIG
and go to the STARTUP tab. All these things load when your computer start
and you might not need all of them.

Hello,

Windows XP actually has a highly optomized way of dealing with memory, so I
doubt that is the actual problem. If you are having performance problems,
you should check out what is actually "running" in your PC. There are many
ways do to this of course. You may also wish to visit:
http://www.fileresearchcenter.com

The FileResearchCenter.com let's you "see" what is running on your PC, both
good and bad, with complete non-technical descriptions of the files. The
site will also show good and bad processes, extensions, etc. This could give
you an idea of what is running, and possibly slowing your system.

You may also wish to scan your computer for viruses, spyware, adware and the
like

Ken is right.

How much RAM? Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring Task Manager and select the
Performance Tab. What is the Commit Charge? What was the Peak?

How large is your hard drive and how much free space does it have? If
your hard drive is partitioned then details for each partition would be
helpful.

Hope this helps.

No. The BIOS normally never needs to to be upgraded. Certainly don't do it
just because it's X years old and there are upgrades available. Although a
BIOS upgrade normally goes well, it is not without danger. If something goes
wrong while the upgrade is an progress (for example, a lapse in power) you
can be left with no BIOS at all, and an unbootable computer.
Do a BIOS upgrade if you need to--because you are having a problem that the
new version is known to fix--not just because one is available.

You WANT to allow windows to use ALL your physical ram when needed.

If you are having performance issues then disable intrusive background
apps and/or spyware and/or viruses.

Just my personal opinion but I wouldn't screw with
updating your BIOS until you've ruled out all other
potential problems. I'd start problem determination
by first deleting all *.tmp files; emptying the Recycle
Bin; running CHKDSK; rebooting into Safe Mode,
and then running an exhaustive analysis of my system
using competent and trusted anti-virus and spyware
detection applications.
