Windows XP x64 Retail License?

S

Scott Wegner

Hi,

I am starting a new project at my work which involves installing different
versions of Windows in virtual machines. We will be installing 32- and
64-bit versions of Windows XP Professional and Windows Vista Business. We
have started looking into purchasing new Windows licenses for the project,
however I'm having trouble finding Windows XP x64 online.

I was able to find retail licenses for Windows XP (32-bit), and both
versions of Vista. However, the only XP x64 licenses I can find are OEM.
Does anybody know where we can purchase a 64-bit license of Windows XP?

64-bit XP Pro is offered only as an OEM product. There is no other
version.

The exclusive availability of OEM ver. only was just confirmed to me by MS
Cust. Service (not that I did not belive you :). I recently purchased a
64bit laptop which came with 32-bit Win XP Pro downgrade pre-installed but I
want to run a 64-bit version of Win XP Pro on it. Will the OEM license
purchased from the same vendor be valid (=validated) when put on my new
laptop to replace the preinstalled OS? I have read that a partial upgrade
incl. RAM increase can make you eligible for OEM but could not verify this.
The vendor refused to comment.

No. You would need to purchase a new license for Windows XP 64-bit.

Hello,
and thanks but what license should I buy now - retail doesn't exist, OEM is
not applicable... Does that mean that XP 64-bit is only allowed to be
installed on new computers (or whatever satisfies OEM definition) and what I
intended to do is not legal? Oh well...

XP 64bit was only offered to be sold on new (or newly assembled) PCs
and is only good for the "life" of the first PC it gets installed on.

OEM licenses is not transferable and will "die" when the PC it is
installed "dies."
