I heard the x64 is coming VERY soon! WHEN??? Also is it true as long as you
have XP Pro that you can swap your 32 bit license for the 64 bit version free
of charge?

WHEN????

Talk to your dealer for both answers.
Since it is OEM, they will have a better idea as to when they will get it
assuming they want to sell it.

There have been strong rumours that there will be an exchange program of
some kind.
But it is probably at the discretion of the OEM you bought 32 bit and 64
bit.
Since it is OEM only, Most likely Microsoft will not be directly involved
with the end users.

Where on earth did you get the idea that my version of PRO was an OEM
version, for starters? It is NOT.

Secondly, I believe whether it being OEM or not has no bearing. What does
is whether it is PRO or HOME. It needs to be PRO.

According to MAXIMUMpc the current issue, MS is offering an exchange
program. You will be able to exchange your 32 bit license for a 64 bit
license then download the upgrade. They will use software to authenticate
your version before you download. This tells me as long as XP PRO is running
on your system, OEM or retail, you'll be able to upgrade. No middleman
involved, i.e. your dealer/manufacturer.

OBVIOUSLY MVP's are misinformed and don't get informed any more than the
regular customer.

"MAXIMUMpc" does not speak for Microsoft.
There will be no exchange program.
You will not be able to exchange your 32-bit license for a 64-bit
license.

Carey,

Do you have PayPal??

I will bet you $100 or a copy of Windows XP Professional that you are wrong,
and that MS is going to give XP PRO user's an option to download the x64
upgrade free of charge in exchange for their 32 bit license!

Let me know, I'm serious.

You were asking about 64 bit and my answers were about 64 bit.
I was not referring to what you have.
I was referring to 64 bit.
64 bit is OEM only.

Your reference to Maximum PC is not really good since to me they are not
very good at what they attempt to do.
The information you seem to have gotten from Maximum PC is half truths, one
of the reasons I do not like them.
Talk to your dealer for details and full truth of the exchange and if they
will participate.

Thank you Torgeir, I will have to remember that.
But that fact will unfortunately be of no use to the majority of home
users..

Actually, there will also be volume licensing available for WinXP
x64:

I bought my hp pavilion zv5405 notebook with an AMD 64 and WIN XP HOME. I
then upgraded HOME (OEM) to WIN XP PRO (retail) to prepare for x64. So I am
stuck not be able to get XP x64 PRO because I don't have XP PRO OEM??? I
find that hard to believe.

EDITED:

I bought my hp pavilion zv5405 with an AMD 64 and WIN XP HOME. I then
slipstreamed my XP PRO SP1 (retail) and then upgraded WIN XP HOME SP2 (OEM)
to WIN XP PRO SP2 (retail) to prepare for x64. So I am stuck not be able to
get x64 PRO because I don't have XP PRO OEM??? I find that hard to believe.

I never said that.
Whether OEM or Retail would be required is unknown.
AFAIK, the details are still being worked out.
Regardless whether you have OEM or Retail, that is no guarantee you will be
able to participate.
What did HP say when you asked them?
What did your local dealer say?

In any case, you may need to buy 64 bit if you want it unless you were given
specific upgrade rights at time of original sale.
That is the way is usually works when a new OS comes out.

Assuming you have a bet, it seems you lose.
"...and that MS is going to give XP PRO user's an option to download the
x64..."
Note the word "and" in your sentence.
I do not see an option to download on the provided link or anywhere else.
Unless Microsoft comes with a download option for the upgrade, you owe
Carey.

Maximum PC may be right once in a while, any monkey can given enough
chances.
But they still do not speak for Microsoft and I don't trust that source as
far as I can throw your car.

J

Jupiter Jones [MVP]

Don't be ridiculous.
I NEVER bet.
And as I see it you owe Carey.

Maximum PC just like monkey can get it right sometimes given enough chances.
I personally do not trust them and read their magazine once, they lost all
credibility on that issue with the lame response the editor and another
employee gave about their content.

You should read the thread again.
There seem to be a few points of what was said that you have apparently
missed.

Jones from Mars,

Are you as thick headed?

She wrote:

"There will be no exchange program.

SHE'S WRONG and YOU were too. Admit it. Typical MVK (K is Know it alls)
they never think they are wrong.

Whether download or CD doesn't matter. I was 99% right. Anil SOB. The
bottom line is there IS an exchange program and you are able to exchange your
32-bit license for x64. I bet if there isn't already a simply download,
there will be. Just like getting SP2, you can order the CD or download the
..enu.

J

Jupiter Jones [MVP]

I never suggested I am a "Know it alls", you did.
I never said there would be no exchange program.
I was certain there would be but not near as liberal as it turned out.
I was wrong in what I expected but I never stated it would not happen.
Read the thread again.

"Whether download or CD doesn't matter."
Then why did you say "and that MS is going to give XP PRO user's an option
to download"
You said it as fact.
But since you are wrong "Whether download or CD doesn't matter.", convenient
answer, discount your own previous statements.

You put the word "and" in the statement giving the bet with Carey two parts.
You were correct on one and wrong on the other.
If one out of two is "99%", you use different math than I do.

Your comparison to 64 bit Windows XP is far off.
One is an operating system and the other is a Service Pack.
If you see them as the same you have a lot to learn.
I could be wrong, but I doubt 64 bit will not be available for download any
more than Windows XP or Server 2003 are available for download.

Your need to insult to shore up your point of view shows much of your
character and nothing of anyone else's.
Good bye.
