Windows XP x64 and drivers

T

Thany

Just a little question: would is be possible to use Windows XP x64 and still
have 32 bits kernel-mode drivers, such as Daemon Tools or VMWare?

I'm planning to buy an Athlon 64 X2 when it's released, but I want to know
if I'm doing the right thing by also buying XP x64...

Best to post over at Microsoft.Public.Windows.64bit.General.

Anyway - 32-Bit drivers are not compatible with X64. For the
programs you mention, I would check the vendors own Forums
for information.

X64 has just been released. It's going to take some time for the
3rd-Party vendors to catch up. My own guess would be around
October for things to be generally available. Probably around the
same time-frame when dual-core CPUs become available.

Realistically, X64 introduces all sorts of issues, as vendors will
now have to post both traditional/64-bit drivers & applications.
Hopefully, all drivers & apps will be "Decorated" appropriately
to stop installs to the wrong platform.

Responders are trying to re-direct posters/postings to the 64-bit
NG, because that's where experienced/knowledgeable persons
are likely to post. (At this point everybody is learning the ins/outs
of X64).

I don't recall this dual OS problem .. being much of a issue when we went
from 16bit OS to 32bit OS .....

In that case, the newer technology incorporated the older. Also,
there was a 1-to-1 movement. Here, we're talking about XP (X3),
Home (32), Pro (32) and X64. This is why X64 is only going to
be available in OEM distribution channels.

Image the problems if X64 was on the shelf at your neighborhood
Best Buy. That's the motivation for the Advancement program. A
way to get X64 in the hands of the people who know about it &
not allow "Average" users to get it and find out it requires a 64-Bit
processor or their scanner won't run........ Most people would
look at the package front and assume it's a new version of XP for
everybody.
