windows xp wont boot???

my pal says her pc was turned of at the wall and wont
boot into windows xp now.the pc boots into a black
opology screen saying windows xp cant start-there is a
choice of different startups-safe mode/backup ect but
they all seem to run for 10 seconds then the pc boots
back to opology screen with the choices of startups. she
has no recovery cd only the original windows xp cd can
anyone help i dont want to do a complete reinstall as i
would loose all files on pc. some help would be well
good. cheers

Make certain you check all connections. You can do a Repair Install with her
XP CD providing it is not a "recovery CD". A Repair Install will simply
"install overtop" and won't affect installed programs, settings or data. If
it is an actual XP CD then follow the instructions here to a Repair Install
