Black Screen during boot up -- after Windows Xp boot screen

I keep getting a black screen when I try to boot up. The black screen appears
after the Windows XP boot screen comes on and appears to fully load Windows.
What can I do to get beyond this black screen? Any help would be appreciated.

How long have you waited?
If it has a network card in it, it can sometimes wait a long time waiting to
detect networks before it'll continue.
Will it boot in safe mode ok?

Is the computer locked up? What happens if you move the mouse or tap
the Shift key?

I get a black screen about one bot out of five. I don't know why --
and the first time it happened it was certainly disconcerting -- but
apparently nothing is wrong. Every time this happens, I just move the
mouse and the Welcome screen appears immediately. It's as though the
screen saver had kicked in upon boot.
