hi, i hope this makes sense ( asking for a friend)
-- on his Dell laptop running xp home, he was trying to update his vga
driver when he apparently got a message stating that the driver he is
downloading is interfereing with the driver already on his machine?? and ask
does he want to continue downloading ..he clicked no ..since then all he gets
is a black screen.. he has tried getting into safe mode but as soon as safe
mode boots up it quickly disappears back to Black screen . will he have to
Reformat or is there another solution? any help greatly appreciated.
Thankyou,Regards

Hi

Can you friend get to a screen that has 'Last Known Good Configuration' as
an option - same screen as Safe Mode? If so ask him to try that option.

Hi Will
sorry ,forgot to mention he tried that too , as soon as the screen comes up
he doesnt get a chance to click on any options, it just reverts back to a
black screen.

If your friend was only in the process of downloading a driver it could not
have affected his system. Display drivers should be uninstalled before any
new driver is installed. Dell customer support would be the place to
contact. But as a suggestion, try attaching an external monitor; it may be
that the monitor setting was changed from the internal LCD display to
external monitor. Also there should be a key combination to press in the
very early stages of boot up to gain access to the BIOS, which may have a
setting for monitor selection, and there may be a function key on the
keyboard to select a monitor.

No matter what, a reformat and reinstall is not necessary.
