Windows XP Won't Boot Up

Last night I re-installed a failed hard drive, into my functioning home
computer system thinking I could possibly use my new harddrive and anti-virus
software to see what was wrong with the old harddrive. After installing the
failed harddrive via ribbon cable and power connection and rebooting the
computer. it hung at the dos screen identifying "Verifiing DMI Pool Data...
then Boot from ATAPI CD-ROM:... Disk Boot Failure, Insert System Disk and
Press Enter"
If I insert Windoes XP CD it will boot up properly and function.

I inserted the windows xp cd and ran setup. It found previous version of
windows xp and noted a problem with the installation. I tried to repair it
from setup window but problem remained.
Ran System restore wizard, no luck.

Did you change the jumpers on your 'failed' drive to slave or cable connect?
Your new hard drive would be master and your 'failed' drive should be
designated as slave. The BIOS probably cannot distinguish which drive it
should boot from as both may be set as master.
Check your drive instructions for details of setting the jumpers.

I didn't change the jumper on the failed drive to slave. Not sure how to do
it. Will investigate and try it.

Further to my eariler posting after the trail run with the failed drive I
disconnected it from ribbon cable and power supply. I noted during start-up
the computer did recognize my new harddrive device and no mention of the
failed drive present. Then it failed to boot up.

Bubba, Take a look at your new drive installation instructions. That should
give you an idea about jumper settings. They are usually the same for most
drives. A picture of the jumper settings may also be on the top of the old
drive.

If the system recognised the new drive when you disconnected the old drive,
then the problem is due to the old drive not being marked as slave.

As for the new drive failing to boot what error message came up during the
boot sequence?

If the following is true:
1. new hard drive is installed as single or master
2. bios "sees" it properly
3. bad drive is left out of the box for now
4. you can boot from the xp cd.
you should be able to boot to the windows xp cd
then see, partition and format the new drive
then install xp on the new hard drive so it boots
properly.
Once that's done, hook up the old hard drive
and get off of it what you can and use it for
anything non-critical or dump it.
