Windows XP will not load patch for sasser virus

When trying to run the patch we recieve the following
message:
Cannot verify integrity of the file update.inf. Make sure
that the crypotographics service is running on this
computer. When checking the crypotographics is running.
We are unable to do any microsoft windows updates. Any
idea what can be done to fix this?
