Windows XP USB 2.0 Issue

J

John

I have a Mitsumi FA404A 7-in-1 Card Reader/Floppy Drive.
The floppy attaches with a floppy drive cable and the
card reader attaches to an internal usb port on the
motherboard.

My motherboard uses the nVidia nForce 2 chipset and I
have installed the latest utility drivers (v3.13)

My operating system is Windows XP Home SP1a

My problem is that the card reader will only work as a
usb 1.1 device.

Windows XP recognizes it as a HI-SPEED device when I plug
it into the motherboard and all is well with the standard
PCI to USB Host Controller and Standard Open HCD USB Host
Controller drivers. In this case I have the motherboard
(A Shuttle SN42G2 with an FN41 motherboard and Award BIOS
FN41S022) set to USB 1.1

When I set the BIOS to 1.1/2.0 windows recognizes the
controller and loads the Standard Enhanced PCI to USB
Host Controller along with the Standard OpenHCD USB Host
Controller. This time when I plug the card reader in
Windows reports New Hardware Found: USB Mass Storage
Device followed by An Error Occurred During Hardware
Installation. The driver it is attempting to load is
usbstor.sys

I'd like to solve this problem. Any help would be
appreciated.

Have you checked the manufacturer's website for updated drivers?

Michael,

Thanks for asking.

I checked the Shuttle website and tried their latest
posted drivers for the FN41 motherboard. They produced
the same result. I was maticulous when installing driver
sets as I reloaded Windows XP Home SP1a from scratch
before installing the nForce 2 driver set. I also went
to the nVidia website and tried the latest (later than
shuttle's post) drivers available v3.13 and got the
results I posted.

I've also checked with Mitsumi; however, there are no
drivers for this device as it is plug and play with XP.

When it works with the BIOS set to USB 1.1 here are the
driver details:

USB Mass Storage Device:
usbstor.sys 5.1.2600.1106 (xpsp1.020828-1920)

OEI-USB2 Compact Flash USB Device:
disk.sys 5.1.2600.1106 (xpsp1.020828-1920)
PartMgr.sys 5.1.2600.0 (XPClient.010817-1148)

OEI-USB2 SM/MS/SD USB Device:
disk.sys 5.1.2600.1106 (xpsp1.020828-1920)
PartMgr.sys 5.1.2600.0 (XPClient.010817-1148)

It would appear to me that their is some incompatibility
with drivers specific to usb 2.0 and the nVidia nForce 2
chipset:

My suspision is that it is the driver for the Standard
Enhanced PCI - USB Host Controller as this seems to be
the only diference when I try the USB 2.0 setting, but
this is only a hunch.

Do you happen to have a VIA chipset, if yes, have you checked the VIA site?
I've seen issues such as this with VIA chipsets in the past.

No, I have the nVidia nForce 2 Chipset and have tried
their latest drivers. Can you get me any help?

Sorry, I missed the chipset in your previous post.

In doing some checking, I don't think it should be looking for usbstor.sys,
that's a WinMe file and I'm not sure it exists on XP. I have USB 1.1 and
2.0 ports enabled on my system, the 1.1 are on the motherboard and the 2.0 I
added. I just ran a full scan of my system and don't find usbstor.sys. I
think there's a driver issue here with your reader. You might want to check
back with the manufacturer. Most of what I found on Google seems to lead in
the same direction. People that seem to have a similar problem are either
looking for it on a previous OS or they've run into some driver installation
error on XP, though, for the most part, the hardware for which they were
trying to install drivers was a bit dated, at least by XP standards.

Is there a more current version of usbstor.sys?

Not that I'm aware unless it is included with the driver set with the device
and judging by the version number you've posted, that would be the most
current version. I'm not sure a USB 2.0 device should be looking for
usbstor.sys or having the kind of issue you have described unless the
drivers for the device or its install routine was faulty.

There are no drivers for the device. It is plug and
play. usbstor.sys is the driver used for this device
under usb 1.1 and it works, but something at the windows
xp driver level doesn't work under usb 2.0 with the
nForce 2 chipset. I'm thinking it has to be either
usbstor.sys or usbehci.sys. If there are more current
drivers than the ones I have that came with SP1a, then
I'd like to try them...

None that I'm aware of. Do you have any other USB 2.0 devices and did you
have this problem with those?

This is not likely to change on the XP side unless there were an inordinate
number of users with the problem as any such change would ripple across the
entire OS and its installed base. Hence, if there's a conflict with the
nForce chipset, it would be up to the manufacturer to update on their side.

This type of issue happens frequently with VIA chipsets and they routinely
offer updates, I would think the same would be true of nVidia if they are
going to properly support their chipset.

Michael,

I did have other problems and I was pretty convinced it
was an incompatibility issue with the nForce Chipset. I
returned my AMD Shuttle and replaced it with an Intel
Shuttle and it works like a champ!

Thanks, for letting us know, John.

I'm glad you got it working, too bad you had to replace the motherboard, I'm
sure you had high hopes and big plans for that nForce chipset.
